A TSD Rally

A TSD Rally is a fun afternoon drive on the wonderful back roads of central Kentucky with a lot of ‎good camaraderie and food and drink at the end!‎

The Rally requires a driver and navigator in each car. The driver drives and the navigator does ‎everything else.‎

The object is to follow the route correctly and at the exact average speed required (which varies ‎many times over the route) so that you arrive at checkpoints (usually five or six) at exactly the ‎correct time. For each hundredth of a minute you are early or late you receive one point. (For ‎scoring convenience the rally is timed in hundredths of a minute rather than in seconds.) ‎

The tricky part is that you will not know where the checkpoints are until you arrive at one. Each of ‎the six legs is scored separately, with a max of 200 or 300 points per leg. You cannot make up for ‎being late at one checkpoint by being early at the next. On the other hand, if you get lost on one ‎leg you can still finish well. The team with the lowest total score for the six legs wins.‎
Each team will be given route instructions which describe the turns to make and the speed to drive ‎for each portion. Sometimes the mileage will be listed. Speeds will always be at or below the legal ‎limit for the road. (This event is a tulip diagram event and every instruction will have a mileage.) A ‎tulip diagram is a schematic of an intersection as if you were looking straight down on it. You enter ‎the intersection from the direction of the bulb and leave the intersection in the direction of the ‎arrow. Because we give the mileage of each turn it makes route following very simple. ‎
The first part of the route is the odometer run, which contains no checkpoints and is provided for ‎you to compensate for any difference between your car's odometer and the one used to set up the ‎course. You are given a set amount of time (usually 25 to 30 minutes) to run the odometer run ‎which gives you time at the end to do any calculations you may wish to do ‎

Cars will leave the start at one-minute intervals. ‎

When you see a Checkpoint, continue driving until you pass the “Official Checkpoint Sign.” The ‎worker will record your time as you pass. ‎

Pull to the side of the road after you pass and send one person from your car to take your score ‎card to the official to record your "in time" to the checkpoint. You will also be assigned an "out time" ‎‎(when you should leave the out marker, two minutes later). You will receive a control data slip ‎which contains the "out marker" (the point from where you leave the Checkpoint and start the next ‎leg, usually around one tenth of a mile past the checkpoint sign). The data slip will also show the ‎calculations showing the times and distances for the leg. (The checkpoint workers do not usually ‎have time to calculate your score, however all the information in on the score card to allow you to ‎calculate your score.)‎

Sometimes the Rally master plans a break. This will be noted on the instructions.‎

Equipment

A stopwatch, clipboard, pens/pencils, and four-function calculator are permitted and recommended ‎‎(but many people do rallies “by the seat of their pants” with no equipment). ‎
